LGBT Film Festival

December, Slovenska Kinoteka, Kinodvor, Tiffany Club, K4

This festival was first held in 1984 as part of the Magnus festival and is considered the oldest LGBT film festival in Europe, and the oldest international film festival in Slovenia. Film screenings traditionally take place at Slovenska Kinoteka in December. On its 30th anniversary, we renamed the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival to the LGBT Film Festival. This year, the festival celebrates its 40th anniversary together with the LGBT movement. The films are shown with English subtitles.

Since 2009, the festival has been organising the Pride Parade in Ljubljana, which in recent years has developed into a cultural and political festival of international dimensions. The Pride Parade Festival is a festival of LGBTIQ+ culture with a distinct political note. It concludes with the annual Pride Parade, which is a protest march through the city of Ljubljana. It ends with a public presentation of the political demands of the LGBTIQ+ community in Slovenia in relation to the bearers of social power, to institutions, and to wider society. It is a public manifestation aimed at breaking the silence and resisting homosexuality being pushed out of public life. It is aimed at occupying public space, presenting the life and work of the LGBTIQ+ community, and promoting human rights, equal opportunities, and freedom of choice.

Lesbian Quarter Festival

May, various venues: Slovenska Kinoteka, Metelkova mesto, ŠKUC Gallery, Monokel Club

The Lesbian Quarter is a Slovenian festival of lesbian creativity and activism organised by the ŠKUC Association in Ljubljana. It is an integral part of the feminist and lesbian movement in Slovenia, which strives for the equality and visibility of lesbians in Slovenian society, and is closely related to the assertion of the rights of the Slovenian LGBTQ+ community. The festival grew out of a series of events in the autumn of 2012, with which members of the Lesbian Section LL at ŠKUC celebrated their 25th anniversary.

Red Dawns Festival– festival of alternative women's and gay cultural creativity

March, Metelkova mesto alternative cultural centre

The festival has been held since 2000. The initiators of the festival were women who were already active in the lesbian and feminist associations of KUD Mreža, ŠKUC-LL, Monokel and in the now defunct Women's Centre and Kasandra. With its events, the festival examines the position of women in the inseparable web of art, culture, politics, activism, and everyday life.
