Ljubljana, particularly its old city centre, boasts numerous famous churches which were given their present appearance in the Baroque period, mainly under the influence of Italian, in particular Venetian art of the time.
Ljubljana's most famous churches, such as the Cathedral of St. Nicholas (Stolna cerkev sv. Nikolaja), the Ursuline Church (Uršulinska cerkev) and the Church of St. James (Šentjakobska cerkev), were decorated by some of the most renowned artists of the time of their building. A lot of interesting artistic details, notably those by the architect Jože Plečnik, were added during the renovations that followed.
