Path recap

Time heals all wounds ... And so the passing decades have slowly shaken off the darkness of historical memory - but not memory itself. The Path of Remembrance and Comradeship, a 32.5 km long recreational path that encircles Ljubljana and runs where military barbed wire surrounded the city during World War II.

Detailed path description

Also known as the “Path long the Wire” or “the Green Ring”, it is mainly used by people for walking and jogging, but is also a pleasant trail along which to explore the city by bike.

It is mostly wide, gravelly, and comfortable to walk on, and runs partly through populated parts of the city where it is paved in places. On some sections, it is immersed in nature, like on the Golovec hill or at the Koseški bajer lake, and is generally of a "green" character. Some 7,400 trees of almost 50 species are planted along the route.

The path is marked with signposts outlining its course, and round metal markers in the ground guide hikers along the way. There are memorial stones along the path marking the former positions of bunkers.

The path is mainly flat and allows for easy, mostly carefree cycling. More care is needed when crossing busy roads. The path has a single climb up the Golovec hill, where the ascent is quite steep in places - no matter which side of the hill you climb from. However, the path is wide enough to allow you to push your bike up the hill if need be. The same goes for the descent from Golovec. Cycling along it is extremely pleasant in the shelter of the trees, on comfortable forest paths where you completely lose the feeling that you are actually still in the city.

You can join the path anywhere and can either cycle along the intended direction or choose the opposite direction.

The most important landmarks along the Path are the Žale Cemetery, with its complex of Chapels of Rest designed by the famous architect, Jože Plečnik, and Fužine Castle, which houses the Museum of Architecture and Design.
