MARSH MOSAIC LOOP

A pleasant and easy cycling tour on the doorstep of Ljubljana, which traverses the wonderful, unique landscapes of the Ljubljana Marshes, a mosaic of exceptional natural and cultural landscape. A scenic plain with views framed by the wide forest slopes rising above the marshes.

The “Marsh Mosaic" cycling loop starts at Dolgi Most in Ljubljana, on the historic Path of Remembrance and Comradeship (PST), where barbed wire ran during the Second World War. There are two large explanatory trailhead boards at the start of the trail, and blue signposts featuring a cyclist will be your guide for most of the way. You can also fill your water bottles from the drinking fountain before you start cycling.

As you leave the village and then the forest out of Ljubljana’s city limits, you will see a vast marsh plain with meadows and fields and forest edges, with Mount Krim, the "southern guardian of the marshes", looming overhead, and the views disappearing into the darkness of the forests of the Krim foothills. The route takes you along comfortable asphalt and gravel roads, partly through settlements (Brezovica, Bevke, and Vnanje Gorice) where you can feel the lively residential pulse of the marshes, and partly along more secluded roads that envelop you in pleasant tranquillity.

The Marsh Mosaic (Barjanski mozaik) route is, for the most part, completely flat. In rare places, it leads along busier roads where some more caution is advised.
