Logatec: Roman Road (Trekking/gravel)

On the tracks of the mighty Roman Empire
Path recap
A cycling adventure steeped in the legacy of the mighty Roman Empire. Along the way, you can stop at a fortress from the late Roman period, and refresh yourself after the ten-kilometre climb at an inn that was once a Roman postal station. You will not only enjoy historical heritage but also beautiful nature, especially in the vast forests.
Detailed path description
The tour starts in Kalce, near Logatec. The trail follows a road which leads to the top of a large, forested Karst plateau among the Trnovski gozd forest, Mount Nanos, the Postojna Basin, and the Logaška planota Plateau, between the Notranjska and Primorska regions. It starts with a 10-kilometre-long slope, which does not let up until the end of the climb where riders are greeted by the Stara pošta inn. Just before that, about a third of the way along the route, it is worth turning off the road into the woods to take a breather at the well-preserved remains of the Late Roman fort at Lanišče.
The area of this ride had an important strategic role a long time ago, as indicated by the remains of the Late Roman wall - the 4th century Claustra Alpium Iuliarum. You will also finish your climb in the spirit of the Romans: at the inn which stands on the location of the former post office of Ad Pirum from the period of the first Roman Emperor, Augustus. There, you can also visit an interesting museum exhibition on the fortifications at Lanišče.
Starting point is Gostilnica in picerija Žakelj inn and pizzeria (make arrangements for a parking spot)
Follow the ascent route down to the crossroads where you turn onto the undulating gravel forest road at the edge of Planinsko polje towards the village of Grčarevec. You will then quickly reach the lookout point under Srnjak, which is situated on the site of a former military observation post at the Rapallo border between the former Kingdom of Italy and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. It has a covered area and offers a magnificent view of the Logatec basin.
