Just a stone’s throw from the capital lies the historic town of Kamnik, one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Slovenia and, with its unspoilt natural surroundings, a paradise for lovers of outdoor activities. Besides the charming town centre, sites worth seeing include the Little Castle (Mali grad), Zaprice Castle and the Ursuline convent in Mekinje. Kamnik is also an excellent starting point for various hiking trips to the surrounding peaks. The most famous of them is the high-mountain plateau of Velika Planina, where the Alpine herdsmen take their cows each summer.
Kamnik is separated from Ljubljana by just over 26 kilometres of cycling route. Head north from the centre of Ljubljana and cross the river Sava. Cycle past Ježica and just before Trzin turn onto a pleasant macadam road that will take you almost to Kamniška Bistrica. Then follow one of the cleanest rivers in Slovenia all the way to the final destination. The route takes you past Domžale and the Volčji Potok Arboretum. Spring is the best time to visit the latter, when more than two million tulips bloom in the park. The route continues along the river to Kamnik, which can serve as a starting point for further trips – or you can simply return to Ljubljana from here by bike or by train.
