Grosuplje: GREETING THE BATS IN THE MAYOR’S CAVE (Trekking/gravel)

Grosuplje Pozdrav netopirjev v Zupanovi jami 2 Peter Zakrajsek

Tour seasoned with the underground world and historical heritage.

Path recap

A beautiful and slightly more challenging route, intended for cyclists with a few kilometres under their belt. But persistence in overcoming ups and downs will be more than worth it as you will cycle over undulating terrain with the route offering stunning views, natural features and interesting cultural heritage.

Detailed path description

Grosuplje (where the tour starts and ends) and its surroundings remain a relatively undiscovered tourist destination, but is well worth exploring.

The very first village on the route, Bičje, will impress you with its varied surroundings: meadows and woods and a wooded inselberg, as well as Prehistoric mounds, Roman graves, and the remains of a Roman road near the village...
The rural hinterland of the capital will continue to reveal itself to you as you continue your journey, and in time you will be passing close to the major attractions in the area: Županova jama (Mayor’s Cave) and Tabor nad Cerovim. In the cave, you will be mesmerised by the picturesque underground world of stalactites, and the other is one of the few defensive compounds protecting against Turkish invasions that have survived in Slovenia to the present day. Both landmarks are open to visitors, but make sure you check the availability of tours in advance.

From here, the route will lead you through the forest to Cerovo, home to another of the area's biggest attractions: Kingfisher Grove (Vodomčev gaj), a treasure trove of flora and birds, and home of the pleasant Kingfisher Nature Learning Trail (Po sledeh vodomca). Then it's back to some more genuine countryside until the end of the trip.

Please note: The Velike Lipljene–Št. Jurij section can be very busy, so extra caution is advised!

Tip: To make the climbs easier, we recommend that you appraoch the route in the clockwise direction.
