Ljubljana is one of the greenest cities in the world, with an incredible 542 m2 of green area per inhabitant. The Green Ljubljana Tour connects the green areas of the city to the surrounding area and shows us why Ljubljana is known as a green capital. Rožnik, Tivoli, Golovec and the Ljubljansko Barje wetland invite you to escape the urban bustle and relax in the embrace of nature.
Begin the route in the city centre and head south across the Prule district to the first point of interest – the Ljubljana Botanic Garden, opened in 1810 and home to more than 4,500 different plant species. Continue along the river Ljubljanica for a few kilometres until you come to the Ljubljansko Barje Nature Park, a unique landscape on the doorstep of Slovenia’s capital city consisting of marshland and peat bogs that is well known as the home to numerous rare plants and animals. In prehistoric times, the area was home to communities of pile-dwellers, whose legacy is today found on UNESCO’s list of World Cultural Heritage. After crossing the flat wetland area the route starts the steep climb over Golovec. Descend the hill on the other side and then tackle the short but fairly steep climb up to Ljubljana Castle, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view over the city that extends all the way to the Alpine peaks in the distance. Now ride back down to the centre of Ljubljana and continue the route around the foot of Rožnik Hill to Koseze Pond. Immersed in greenery, follow the cycle path along the foot of the hill towards the city’s biggest park, Tivoli, and then back towards the city centre, where the Green Ljubljana Tour ends.
