Path recap

Circumnavigate Ljubljana by bike! You will follow in the footsteps of history surrounded by the hustle and bustle of the city and weave through green urban oases. The route will take you over a good portion of the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship, a unique historical monument. Along the way you will get to feel the pulse of different neighbourhoods and breathe some fresh air in the forests of the Ljubljana hills.

Detailed path description

The tour starts at the Fužinski grad castle, which houses the Museum of Architecture and Design. From there, you will quickly reach the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship (PST). The Path is 32.5 km long and runs along the line of the barbed wire that surrounded Ljubljana during World War II. It is now one of the most popular recreational areas in the city. It is well signposted and will take you through Ljubljana's lively neighbourhoods, parks, meadows and wooded hills. On the first section of the route, you will probably particularly enjoy cycling through a long linden and maple tree avenue and through one of the greatest masterpieces of the great architect Jože Plečnik - the Žale Cemetery.

You will leave the PST for the first time a little further on from Koseze Pond, a lake that attracts many locals who walk and sit by the lake, especially on fine days. From here, you have a short ride to Bike Park Ljubljana, a popular MTB park where the first climb of the route starts. From the asphalt road you will soon be directed into the forest by a blue signpost for the Slovenian Mountain Biking Route (STKP). You will follow the trail along the undulating forest cart tracks and climb up to the hut at Klobuk. From the grassy summit that you can reach on foot, a beautiful view of part of the Ljubljana Marshes and the hills beyond opens up.

From Klobuk, you will return to the PST through settlements and then pass through the plain surrounding the town. This will take you to the second and final climb of the route, Golovec, one of the city's most beautiful hills. Cycling along the PST across Golovec is forbidden, so you will soon leave it and head over the hill up to the a wide gravel road, and then along a signposted trail that will you to Orle, a popular hiking point above Ljubljana with an inn and a lookout tower. Leaving Orle, you will descend along a mainly wooded path to another popular Ljubljana hiking point, Sveti Urh, with its church and interesting monument. Now you will be left with one last descent to the plain, where you will again join the PST. From here, it is just a stone's throw to your starting point, meaning that you have circled the entire city!
