BEAVER TRAIL (BOBROVA POT)

LAS Barje Ales Fevzer Bobrova pot 2

Along the hillsides of the marsh’s inselberg

Path recap

Old building architecture, sacral village heritage, ancient history, biotic diversity... and the marshy plain. The Beaver Trail (Bobrova pot), which leads along the outskirts of the Blatna Brezovica inselberg and beyond, is brimful of stories telling you about the interesting cultural and natural landscape here. The trail is mostly flat with only two short inclines to be overcome. It winds along quiet village roads, dirt roads, and cart tracks. It offers beautiful vistas of the hills bordering the Ljubljana Marshes.

Detailed path description

The Beaver Trail starts in the village at the explanatory trailhead board. There are a total of eighteen boards along the way, so the trail is sure to satisfy the curiosity of anyone who would like to learn as much as possible about the environment they are visiting.

From here, signposts with the beaver, the trail's mascot, guide you consistently along the way. Why the beaver? Because of the famous work of the same name by the priest and writer from nearby Notranje Gorice, Janez Jaln, in which he presents the life of the pile dwellers who lived here more than four millennia ago.

Cycling the Beaver Trail, you will also learn about the pile dwellers of the area - their dwellings, handicrafts, clothing, diet, and so on. The route passes by most of the village's attractions, from the Church of St. James (the Slovenian St. James Way (Jakobova pot) also runs past it and on through the village), which the monks of Bistrica wanted to build on top of the hill but the locals repeatedly carried the building materials back to the marsh; to the village chapel with its paintings by the famous church painter Simon Ogrin; to the former Folk Elementary School building and other interesting buildings of rural architecture, from the wooden pigsty and feed kitchen, to haylofts, kozolec hayracks, and typical ground-floor farmhouses with preserved wooden roofs. Visitors can also learn about the biological treasure trove of the Marshes when cycling or hiking the Beaver Trail.

The Blatna Brezovica inselberg rises just 35 metres above the plain, which is certainly high enough to reward you with an even more expansive view when you reach the top.

The Beaver Trail is suitable for cyclists and hikers alike.
