In the municipality of Škofljica, flax spinning and scutching have a rich history and tradition. In the past, these practices played a significant role, as they allowed for the production of flax threads, which were the basic material for making various clothing items, textiles, and other useful products. Flax was an important cultural crop, providing raw materials for the textile industry and domestic needs.
Today, the tradition of flax spinning and scutching is mostly preserved as cultural heritage and is part of traditional events and fairs. However, there are still individuals who maintain these skills and ensure that they are not forgotten.
The "Flax Spinning and Scutching Festival" and the "Festival of Flavours" will introduce visitors to the heritage of flax processing at the Lisičje Mansion, a 16th-century estate mentioned by J. V. Valvasor in his Slava vojvodine Kranjske (The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola). The event will feature music and a wide array of flavours "spiced" with flax, along with other local delicacies.
You will have the opportunity to:
- Scutch, spin, and weave flax,
- Print plants onto linen fabric, and
- Try potato printing.
You can also enjoy:
- Viewing vintage cars and sculptures,
- Listening to award-winning music school students playing the saxophone, viola, cello, and singing,
- Tasting flaxseed pizza, potica cake, roasted potatoes and much more.
