The Vienna Girls' Choir was founded in 2004 as the female version of the world-renowned Vienna Boys' Choir (Wiener Sängerknaben), which dates back to 1498, when it was founded by the Ljubljana-born choirmaster and composer, as well as the first Bishop of Vienna, Jurij Slatkonja. Initially, the Vienna Girls' Choir consisted of only a few singers, but today it is a chamber choir of 25 dedicated young girls aged 9 to 15. The girls are trained according to the methods of the Vienna Boys' Choir. The choir regularly performs its own concerts at home venues, including the MuTh Hall, the Vienna Boys' Choir Concert Hall and the Hofburgkapelle (Court Chapel) in Vienna. The Vienna Boys' Choir can also be heard regularly on special occasions, such as the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 2023 or the concert celebrating the 525th anniversary of the Vienna Boys' Choir at the Musikverein in Vienna.
The girls take part in numerous tours, both at home and abroad. Since autumn 2024, the girls have been following the same academic programme as the boys, attending the Vienna Boys' Choir Gymnasium in Vienna.
The choir is conducted by Stefan Foidl, with Sophie Müller as their pedagogical director. At the upcoming concert in Ljubljana, the choir will present a cross-section of their wide repertoire, which ranges from Baroque to contemporary and from classical to lighter rhythms.
