The Planina hill, with its mountain hut and a popular 22-metre-high wooden outlook tower, lies to the west of the small town of Vrhnika, on the edge of the Ljubljana Moors. Its outlook tower offers beautiful views of the hill's near surroundings and the Alpine peaks in the distance.
Planina is one of the most popular hiking destinations in the area. It is the crossing point of several mountain routes, including the E6 European long-distance footpath.
One of the popular routes to the top of Planina starts from the Star maln (Old Mill) lodge and takes you across the Ajdovska stopnja (Giant Footprint) mountain pass. According to a legend, Ajdovska stopnja is the footprint of a giant girl known as Ajdovska deklica, who was so huge that she stood on Planina with one foot and the Ljubljanski vrh hill with the other while washing clothes in the waters of the Bela stream.
