The MUZA Museum and Gallery is located in one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau buildings in the heart of Ljubljana, on Čopova Street, which once housed the Ljubljana City Savings Bank. MUZA, with the Museum of Banking of Slovenia and the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, combines banking and art. The museum showcases the history of banking, offers an experience of banking practices, and shares financial knowledge. The gallery displays the NLB Art Collection and contemporary art from Southeast Europe.
Permanent Exhibition on the Development of Banking
The permanent exhibition aims to bring closer the significance of money and banking practices, presenting the impact they have had on our lives both in history and today. Through interactive and video content as well as museum artifacts, visitors gain the understanding that money plays an important role in our lives, but what matters most is how we manage it.
The exhibition covers the development of banking worldwide, the evolution of money and its purchasing power in Slovenia over the last 200 years, the growth of savings banks, credit unions, and commercial banks during this period, as well as the personalities who directed this development. It is complemented by an object-based presentation of banking practices. Three banking counters are displayed, allowing visitors to compare the way of working and the customer-oriented approach from 1905 to the present day. An open ATM demonstrates the composition and operation of the "banking self-service" as it was called in the 1990s. Visitors can enter the most secure part of any bank—the vault—where they transform into vault keepers, count cash, and check the authenticity of banknotes. Using VR glasses, visitors dive into the world of virtual reality and gain a more tangible understanding of the digital transformation of banking.
Digital Financial Literacy Center
At the heart of the museum lies a focus on improving visitors’ personal financial literacy. They can individually enhance their knowledge through the Financial Labyrinth. At six stations, visitors can test their relationship with money, play financial games like Tetris, Monopoly, Snake, and Stock Market, and learn the rules of budgeting, shopping, saving (for goals and financial security), and smart investing through diversified investments. At the final station, there is a financial literacy test, and visitors can also test their knowledge of financial terms in the game of Millionaire.
MUZA Shop
In the MUZA museum shop, visitors can find souvenirs and practical items related to money, banking, and art, made by Slovenian entrepreneurs. The shop offers a wide selection of piggy banks, wallets, and coin holders, as well as financial games. Numismatics enthusiasts will enjoy the rich collection of numismatics from the period between 1980 and 2014.
