In September, Ljubljana Tourism organised a #Meet4Impact workshop in Ljubljana to discuss the long-term impact of the meetings industry in host destinations, in particular how to ensure that it has the most positive impact on them. The workshop was moderated by Geneviève Leclerc, Founder and Director of #Meet4Impact.

The pursuit of events that bring long-term benefits to destinations has been increasingly at the forefront of the meetings industry in recent years. Ljubljana has already established itself as one of the most sustainable destinations in the world, and part of the meetings industry is trying to focus particularly on sustainability.

Ljubljana Tourism's vision is therefore to strive for the selection and preparation of bids for the hosting of the events that are in line with the needs of the local environment, and that will therefore have a long-term positive impact on the local and wider environment. It is important that events contribute to the economic and social development of society, both the local community and the wider environment.

Events should enrich destinations

During the workshop, participants asked themselves questions such as: What kind of a capital are we creating with our events? The capital is not only about money - it is about anything that increases the benefits for a particular environment. The aim of event organisers should be to leave a positive legacy in the destination -  positive social, environmental and intellectual capital that enriches the destination even after the event is over.

International association events are extremely important drivers of social and economic change, as they support the development of professional sectors, the local community and its needs, and the objectives of sustainable development, the workshop noted.

Destinations need to strategically plan the impact of the events they host. In this way, it can contribute to sustainable development, social progress and a legacy that will benefit not only present but also future generations.
