Ljubljana Makes the List of Most Sustainable Tourism Practices for the 10th Time
15 Oct 2024
Ljubljana has made it onto the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories list for the tenth time, which highlights successful examples of sustainable and responsible tourism from around the world. This time, Ljubljana made the top 100 sustainable stories thanks to the LUV Fest. The festival encourages visits to Ljubljana during less tourist-heavy months and contributes to community building and the preservation of cultural heritage by involving cultural institutions, local creators, merchants, NGOs, young artists, and citizens.
The Green Destinations Top 100 Stories competition collects high-quality, sustainability-focused content and best practices from tourism destinations worldwide through an annual public call. These examples serve as inspiration for other destinations, tour organizers, and visitors. The destinations that make the top 100 stand out for their effectiveness, innovation, and the ability to inspire other destinations. The competition has been organized by Green Destinations since 2014, and Ljubljana is the only city in the world to have made this prestigious list ten times.
This year, the international jury was impressed by LUV Fest, a festival of love, art, and rambling, which takes place from February 8 to March 12. It brings together a rich cultural program, city tours, exhibitions, workshops for all generations, and offers from hotels, restaurants, and shops, all under the theme of love. Ljubljana Tourism ensures that the festival provides vibrant activities for locals, while also attracting foreign visitors during a quieter tourist season with its appealing offerings. The festival creates a space for new artistic projects and supports young creators, who showcase light art installations in public spaces each year, enhancing the city’s image and gaining more international exposure. The local community is deeply involved in LUV Fest, as the program and offerings are co-created by local artists, NGOs, merchants, hospitality providers, and residents. Their feedback and suggestions are carefully considered by Ljubljana Tourism for the festival's future development, ensuring that the event maintains an authentic character and supports the local economy.
With its consistent inclusion on the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories list, Ljubljana Tourism and the City of Ljubljana continue to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable development across all areas of their operations. Ljubljana has previously earned its spot on the list due to its outstanding achievements in sustainable tourism, recognized by its sustainability certification, as well as through innovative experiences and projects such as creative artisan workshops, the Digital Innovation of Plečnik's Heritage project, KulKul Moment, Culture Online, and the Moustache Tour.
