Themed cycle routes around Ljubljana
The themed cycle routes were designed by the ZaMestoPoDveh group in conjunction with the City of Ljubljana, while Ljubljana Tourism participated in the marking of the routes.
The purpose of the themed cycle routes was to establish attractive connections between different parts of Ljubljana along quieter streets for daily bike commuters. At the same time, these routes represent an additional opportunity for visitors to Ljubljana, who can experience Plečnik’s architecture, enjoy the beauty of the river Ljubljanica or visit green parts of the city – all by bike.
We have marked the following themed routes for cyclists:
The Waterside cycle route is 12 km long and blends the urban environment with nature, running along the river Ljubljanica. From Fužine Castle it follows the riverbank through the Štepanjsko Naselje and Kodeljevo districts into the city centre (Petkovšek Embankment, Prešeren Square, Congress Square, Novi Trg) and ends on the river at Špica.
The Plečnik cycle route (14 km) links Plečnik’s legacy in the Trnovo district, at Žale and in Tivoli Park.
The Forest cycle route (7 km) follows the route Tivoli–Zoo–Koseze–Spodnja [Lower] Šiška and skirts Rožnik to connect Tivoli to Mostec.
Beside them we also recommend:
The Path of Remembrance and Comradeship (POT) is a 35 km tree-lined gravel path circling Ljubljana. It was designed by the architect Edvard Ravnikar and follows the route of the barbed wire perimeter that surrounded the city during the Second World War.
