Did you know that the authenticity of gold coins used to be tested by biting them? Do you know why fire is the goldsmith’s best friend? Johann Christoph Steidl Porenta knows how to give a tour of the goldsmith’s craft that fully engages his visitors’ attention, as the artisan’s narrative is fascinating and spiced with a fair amount of humour.
We all know jewellery as a finished product. But what lies behind this, especially when made by hand? How much work is there, and what kind? For example, how is a silver bar made which can then be worked into a ring?
Experience the journey from raw silver to pure silver which is ready for jewellery making. You can watch the artisan melt silver and copper (he will also explain why copper is added), the fast setting of the alloy and how it needs to be repeatedly purified, forged and rolled. You will have a chance to pick up the forging hammer yourself and help make the perfect silver bar for jewellery making.
This is an exceptional and rare opportunity!
